A Polish artist educated in Gdansk and Düsseldorf, Danuta Karsten is known for her large-scale installations using simple materials like light, air, and water.
Fascinated by Puerto Rico’s algae and its bioluminescence, she collaborated with scientists to recreate the glow in a UV-resistant, eco-friendly turquoise-blue color inspired by the natural glow of the algae. Initially using PET bottles with glowing granules to mimic the microscopic flagellates, she later switched to recycled PU film to reduce plastic use. Her work, now resembling natural flagellates, can be illuminated with UV flashlights, offering a poetic glimpse into nature’s hidden wonders.
